Your Read Ratio Matters a Lot!

Not only does it mean your readers like your writing, but it also translates to higher earnings for you

Your read ratio is essential to make the big bucks (but still important for those of us counting our pennies)! | Photo by Markus Winkler on Unsplash

Once upon a time, your earnings on Medium depended on one thing alone: read time. So if your reader spent seven minutes reading your article, you made seven times the money compared to another reader who spent 1 minute reading the same story. Now, things aren’t quite so straightforward.

Since last August, Medium has implemented a new formula for calculating earnings on stories published behind the paywall. The formula isn’t set in stone, and Medium has made adjustments along the way. The exact formula is also a secret (it makes sense; Medium doesn’t want you to game the system), but we know the general idea behind it and what counts towards our gains as writers.

Read time still affects how much you earn, but it isn’t alone in making up your earnings. Although I would love for it to be the main factor in the calculation, I’m not sure that’s accurate. What I do know, though, is that your story’s read ratio, as well as followers gained through that story, interactions (including claps, highlights, and comments), and if your story has been boosted, all count towards your earnings.
