Well, trade season has officially begun! Here is a list of all trades made leading up to and during the 2022 NBA Draft.

June 13: OKC Gets More Picks
Thunder Receive: JaMychal Green, protected 2027 FRP
Nuggets Receive: 30th pick, two future SRPs (2023, 2024)
The Nuggets traded a veteran forward (who opted into his $8.2M contract) to a young, rebuilding Oklahoma City roster. Aside from his experience, Green is a decent rotational player who can space the floor (career 36% 3PT shooter) and rebound well (4.2 RPG this year, 5.7 for his career). Denver now has the 21st and 30th picks in the upcoming draft, while OKC now has the 2nd, 12th, and 34th picks.
June 15: Dallas Lands Christian Wood
Mavericks receive: Christian Wood
Rockets receive: 26th pick, Boban Marjanovic, Trey Burke, Sterling Brown, and Marquese Chriss
In a surprising move, Houston traded away a young big man who played well for a guy making nearly $14M a year (he put up nearly 18 PPG and 10 RPG while shooting 50% from the field and 39% from three). According to ESPN’s Tim McMahon, the trade was made in order to give more minutes to rising second-year center Alperen Sengun and the incoming third overall pick, as well as to clear long-term salary.
Dallas adds more youth and athleticism in the front court, as the 26-year-old Wood should pair very well next to the Slovenian sensation Luka Doncic. On the other side, Houston continues their rebuilding process, receiving another first-round pick — their third in this draft next to #3 and #17 — and more pieces for their bench depth.
Many people — myself included — are stunned that Wood’s trade value was this low. For a player who averaged 21 PPG in 41 games in 2021, being moved for a first-round pick and bench players is appalling, to say the least. It will be thrilling to see Wood in a far better situation, and equally compelling to see what talent Houston drafts late in the first round.
June 22: Jerami Grant Finally Gets Traded
Trail Blazers receive: Jerami Grant, 46th pick
Pistons receive: 36th pick, 2025 first-round pick
After months of speculation, Grant is finally on the move. However, many on social media are stunned that it only took a future first-round pick to acquire the 28-year-old forward, who is two seasons removed from averaging a career-best 22.3 PPG.
The Pistons made this move to clear cap space for free agency, paving the way for them to sign a max player who can help them immensely for the future, such as Deandre Ayton or Miles Bridges.
Still, the deal was incredibly polarizing, and we’ll have to wait and see if it was truly worth it in the end.
DRAFT DAY DEALS
Finally, it’s here! The 2022 NBA Draft, and all the trades that come with it.
Cavs Get Another Draft Pick
Per Woj, the Cavs now have picks 14, 39, 49, and 56, continuing to build a potential contender through the draft.
Lakers Buy into the Second Round
Lakers receive: 35th pick
Magic receive: 2028 second-round pick, cash considerations
Rob Pelinka made it known the Lakers were looking to buy into the second round, and now, they’ve done it.
The purple and gold are looking to add some young legs to their veteran roster tonight, having acquired the 35th pick from the Orlando Magic in exchange for a second-rounder in 2028 and financial considerations. This is another step for the Lakers in building out the roster with younger talent as opposed to older veterans, and it will be exciting to see which rookie ends up under the bright lights of LA.
Knicks Draft and Trade Ousmane Dieng
OKC receives: Ousmane Dieng (11th pick)
Knicks receive: Three 2023 protected first-round picks (via Detroit, Washington, & Denver)
Dieng has a ton of potential. It was also mentioned on ABC that he looks up to Paul George and models his game after Kevin Durant, so OKC is getting a special prospect who will be making an impact sooner rather than later.
Knicks and Pistons Engage in Madness
Knicks receive: 2025 first-round picks (via Bucks)
Pistons receive: Jalen Duren (via Hornets/Knicks), Kemba Walker (via Knicks)
Hornets receive: 2025 first-round pick (via Portland)
It’s incredible how Troy Weaver drafted Jaden Ivey (5th pick) and traded for Jalen Duren (12th pick) and veteran Kemba Walker — all in exchange for a first-round pick. The Pistons’ rebuild through the draft is going great, with each of their picks having fantastic upside. The Knicks, meanwhile, clear up cap space to potentially sign Jalen Brunson, and the Hornets receive more draft capital.
Grizzlies Trade for Jake LaRavia
Grizzlies receive: LaRavia (19th pick)
Timberwolves receive: Picks 22 (Walker Kessler) & 29, future second-round pick
LaRavia, once a relatively unknown prospect, skyrocketed onto the scene after playing very well for Wake Forest — averaging 14.6 PPG, 6.6 RPG, and 3.7 APG on 55–38–77 splits. He gets drafted in the first round, and enters a great situation: a playoff team with excellent player development.
The Wolves gain more depth with the two first-round picks they receive. Kessler, a solid two-way big from Auburn, gets to learn from KAT and Nam Reid, and could potentially compete with the latter to become the Wolves’ backup center.
DeAnthony Melton to the Sixers
76ers receive: DeAnthony Melton
Grizzlies receive: Danny Green, 23rd pick (David Roddy)
The Sixers add a proven rotational point guard who was stellar for Memphis in the regular season season. Melton averaged 10.8 PPG, 4.5 RPG, and 2.7 APG on 40–37–75 splits in 73 games (15 starts). His production declined in the playoffs, however, as the USC alum averaged 5.6 PPG, 3.1 RPG, and 1.6 APG on 32–25–75 splits.
Danny Green, a 13-year vet, is out with a torn ACL and LCL, but is coming to a young and hungry Grizzlies team looking to improve on their recent postseason success. Aside from experience, the three-time NBA champion brings a solid shooting touch to the M, having shot 38% from deep in the regular season and 40% in the playoffs before his injury. Though he may not be seen next season, he is still a valuable locker room presence, and will likely contribute immediately once he’s cleared to get back on the court.
Rookie David Roddy excelled at Colorado State (stats below), and will be a nice small-ball four for the Grizzlies.
Rockets Trade 26th Pick
Rockets receive: Two future second-round picks
Timberwolves receive: Wendell Moore Jr. (26th pick)
Moore, a 3&D player, is coming to a team loaded with guards. He’s been described as a defensive specialist with a growing offensive game. With the chance to learn from Anthony Edwards and Malik Beasley, Moore will thrive with the Wolves.
Kings Trade for 36th Pick, Draft Ignite Guard Hardy
Hardy projects as a 3&D guard/wing, something that the Kings will need in their rotation. Though it was widely expected they would add Jaden Ivey to pair him with De’Aaron Fox, Hardy will have an impact on this young Sacramento roster.
