Twice a month the Bounty Radio podcast highlights new, innovative World Music 2.0. From each episode I select 5 tracks and provide you with their background story. Discover them all alongside more great tropical music in this week’s episode (on Mixcloud)

Gabacho Maroc — Bouderbala

Our Album of the week is Tawassol by Gabacho Maroc. Tawassol means Connection, something of importance to the band who blends different nationalities (French, Algerian and Moroccan) and different music genres (Moroccan, West-African, Gnawa and Jazz). Beside exciting instrumentation you also hear a lot of different vocals, because each of the 8 members of the band also sings on this album. With it 8 full tracks its a surprising but fast voyage into the world of Gabacho Maroc.

Thornato ft. Zongo Abongo — Back it Up

in 2017, Thornato — hailing from Brooklyn — released the critical acclaimed album Bennu. Now he’s back with a fresh EP of which we checked the title track Back It Up. The original idea of this ‘Dembow’ rhythm came out of a pile of Champeta music at the Palenque Records office in Colombia. Inspired by the Soukous-like guitar chops in Champeta music, Thornato began creating his own Afro-Caribbean rhythm and invited the Ghanaian singer Zongo Abongo to voice the track. Thornato got in touch with Zongo after a collaboration of the singer with The Busy Twist who remixed a Thornato track. The Busy Twist also just released a new EP, also featuring Zongo! You can catch a track from the EP right after this one in the mix.

Baianasystem — Alfazema

Baianasystem is a band hailing from Salvador, Bahia (Brazil), that draws inspiration from the big Jamaican soundsystems. Besides being a sound system, they also release a steady collection of music since 2010. Baianasystem creates Future Afro-Brazilian music, by mixing their Brazilian roots (Ijexá, Samba) with Dub, Dancehall or Hiphop. Enough chat, let’s enjoy this stunning video for their Carnival release Alfazema.

Brazzmatazz — Mezcal Y Sangrita

Nothing wrong with some support for bands from the home country.
Brazzmatazz — who are hailing from Ghent, Belgium — are releasing Turbolence, an album full of hot New Orleans funk, ska and balkan madness. A little bit of electronics in the production is the secret sauce that gives Brazzmatazz their own unpolished, raw power. Still, the sound is well balanced and that’s not an easy thing to do if you know Brazzmatazz is an 18-piece brass band!

47 Soul — Mo Light

We’ve been following 47 Soul since a video of the Palestine band, performing for a TBA Live Series in 2014 came on our radar. They started out with a sound they called Shamstep, a combination of the festive, energetic Dabke music with some traditional instrumentation- plus electro Chaabi, hiphop and a bit of reggae. On their latest, Balfron Promise, they opted for an even larger sound with more militant beats and more outspoken electronics. Backed by their famous live performance I’m sure they will fill many arena’s in the coming year.
