5 Tracks You Should Hear This Week

5 essential tracks with a great background story out of Bounty Radio’s S03E07.

--

Twice a month the Bounty Radio podcast highlights new innovative World Music 2.0. From each episode I select 5 tracks and provide you with their background story. Discover them all alongside more great tropical music in this week’s episode (on Mixcloud)

1. Leila Gobi — Tibo Gadeina

Leila became a succesful artist thanks to her distinctive vocal. On ‘2017’ we hear traditional songhai and tamasheq vocals in an unusual electronic and hypnotic setting. Vocal recordings were made in Bamako and mixed down with loops, percussion and synths in NY and LA. Not the fancy kind of electronics, but a sparse and low-tech approach that sounds very honest next to Gobi’s voice and one that gives an hypnotic, trance-like feel to the tracks.

2. Mista Savona — In the Ghetto (feat. Aza Lineage & Birdz-I) [Where We’re From]

Havana meets Kingston originally started as a kickstarter campaign to connect Cuba with Jamaica musically. The final album turned out to be a huge celebration of the musical richness of both islands, covering classics like Chan Chan and Rastaman Vibration in a fine style. From the liner notes: “The album simmers with an energy, warmth and sincerity that seems increasingly hard to find in this digital age. We hope you enjoy it as much as we enjoyed creating it.”And that’s something you hear!

3. BKO — Mali Liberela

More Malitronics! Taken from the forthcoming Mali Foli Coura, a second album by BKO Quintet on Buda Musique. This second project is more electric and it’ the result of the elaborate touring of the quintet, in Europe, Africa and China.

4. Hamad Kalkaba — Astadjam Dada Sare

Nothing new or innovative BUT … It’s with great pleasure and respect I play this track. A lot of tracks in this show comes with great stories, but this one made me realize how strangely convenient and easy it is to receive tracks digitally from the other side of the globe.

For their new release on Hamad Kalkaba, Analog Africa’s search began with a rare 7” in a record shop in Yaoundé. The shop owner mentioned that ‘There is another single with a green cover of the same artist, if I am not mistaken’. Analog Africa searched over 6 years to for that ‘green cover’ and finally found it in a record collection belonging to an old bar in Parakou in northern Benin. The full showcase on Hamad Kalkaba, now a retired Colonel in the army of Cameroon was released on December 8th.

5. Nightmares On Wax — Back to Nature

Brand new single from Nightmares on Wax featuring Kuauhtli Vasquez and the Wixarika Tribe from Mexico. Taken from the forthcoming album ‘Shape The Future’ out 26th Jan on Warp. The track comes with this beautiful video.
