On September 28–30th, Box held its first Hackathon for Good to help out The Nature Conservancy. Teams made up of Box customers came together to create amazing solutions to solve a complex problem that many companies face.

The Challenge

Like most organizations, The Nature Conservancy’s content has exponentially grown as time progresses. As employees leave to continue on their career journey at other places, TNC is left with data that is hard to parse through and stale user accounts that take up licenses. This has caused loss of valuable research that is vital to TNC.

Our hackers were tasked with finding a way to make employee transitions more scalable by doing two things —

  1. Migrate off-boarded employees data to another place, followed by deactivating the user account
  2. Decide what, if any, of the data should be kept rather than storing it forever

The Prizes

1st Place with the best use case for The Nature Conservancy — $2,000

2nd Place with the best use of Box — $1,000

The Winners

The 1st place prize goes to Team Cardboard!

Team Cardboard

Team Cardboard was made up of three individuals that had never met before the hackathon: Michael Henderson(Heroic Technologies), Ryan Pscheid(Fuzion), and Neal Richardson(Bluescape).

They used a Powershell script alongside the Box CLI to de-provision users and migrate content to a service account. Then, they created a proof of concept AI solution to parse through each off-boarded user’s data and attach metadata about any images in the content.

The 2nd place prize goes to Team Nexlogica!

Team Nexlogica

Team Nexlogica all work for Nexlogica who drive digital enterprise transformations: Muhammad Bajwa, Dennis Szumanski, and T Nguyen.

They built a custom UI for onboarding and off boarding employees, integrated AI tools to gather data insights, designed an easy to use content migrator, and used almost every Box tool we offer our enterprise customers!

Huge congratulations to the winning teams!

We are absolutely thrilled by the results of the hackathon and can’t wait to do it all over again next year. We hope to see you there!
