Salido lands another left hook to the head

Orlando Salido is a beast. Combining an amazing origin story — Salido twice walked from Sonora, Mexico into the United States — with his seemingly superhuman indifference to his opponent’s best shot, Salido is emerging as a mythical character in the ring. A man who is continuously scheduled to lose, refuses to succumb to destiny, no matter the obstacles.

Though his last hellacious bout, a majority draw with Francisco Vargas, once again reinforced his steel resolve, it did expose a game plan to defeat him. When Vargas was able to impose his jab, it momentarily prevented Salido from pressing with relentless pressure. By creating extra space, Vargas was able to stun Salido a few times with a solid overhand right. If Vargas had stuck to this game plan, and invested more into shots to the body, he might have emerged as the clear winner.

One does have to wonder: What is it about a brawler that removes fighters from their strategy? Even the virtuoso Vasyl Lomachenko was suckered into this maddening game. Who will be the one to truly outbox Salido? We will have to wait and see until Salido’s next sadistic fight to find out. That being said, it is rumored that his next opponent will be Takashi Miura — not exactly one to stay out of a telephone booth brawl.
