Canarsie, Brooklyn- Brooklyn born rapper Bashar Barakah Jackson, who was professionally known as Pop Smoke was pronounced dead as of Wednesday morning February 19th, 2020. For those who aren’t fimilar with Bashar Barakah Jackson whose hip hop name is Pop Smoke, he is one of hip- hop’s youngest and talented stars.

Pop Smoke was killed in Hollywood Hills. According to LA times, police were responding to a $2.5 million home of Hercules Drive after receiving a phone call from someone reporting a group of people and one of them was armed with a handgun and broke into the property before 5 a.m. Police and investigators say it was a home invasion but some say otherwise.

Who is Pop Smoke? Pop Smoke was a rising star coming from Canarsie. Many Brooklyn rappers come from Flatbush or Bed-Stuy such as Fabolous, Biggie, and Jay Z. Pop Smoke was someone who was known based on his offbeat, growling, and tone of voice. He had that sound and energy that you need in the gym to get motivated. His music made you want to go crazy in the club or at someone ‘s backyard party. He is famous and well known for his single “Baby, baby, don’t trip. Just lower your tone (lower your tone) Cause you could get hit”. This song was in Complex magazine ranked as №14 on it’s “Best Song of 2019” list.

“Pop Smoke represented the Floss, you don’t understand the impact he had on everyone..he spoke facts in his music but he also was creative with his music, he was drill music for us..he was about to take off.” Ralph Smith said. Canarsie for some was called “The Floss’ ‘. Pop Smoke released his second album just two weeks prior to his death. He was scheduled to tour around the world March 13th until April 16th. “It sucks because he died in a city he wasn’t even from. He died in Hollywood, not Canarsie or anywhere in New York but he died in Hollywood.” Smith stated. Many were devastated by the loss of Pop Smoke. Many related his death to Biggie. Hip Hop artist Christopher George Latore Wallace, who goes by Biggie Small, was quite similar. Rapper Biggie Small was from Bed Stuy, New York and was shot and killed on a mini vacation to California. Two artists who grew up in not the most luxurious neighborhood, shot and killed in a town everyone wants to be.

Society connected Pop Smoke music to drill music. Drill music originated in Chicago back in the early 2010s. Rappers such as G.Herbo and Chief Keef, their music is dark, violent and rebelling lyrical content with trap influenced beats. Trap is considered a style of hip pop music that originally originated in the Southern part of the U.S. Rappers such as T.I, Lil Baby, Gunna are considered to be a part of trap making beats. His music defines his hood and how he grew up. His music expressed the lifestyle he had known.

On March 5th, 2020, the streets of Brookyln’s Canarsie were crowded by supporters, fans and family watching the rapper take his final ride through the neighborhood he was from. His carriage with him inside the casket was traveled down Flatlands, which is one of Canasie’s main streets with his family behind in, in a van. Rapper 50 Cent’s came and showed spirit. He was a big fan of Pop Smoke and insisted on finishing his next project album. People stood on front steps of their homes, crowding the streets while they recited all of his old music such as “Christopher Walken, Dior and many more. This was an iconic moment for many because it took you back to the time Christopher Wallace, well known as Biggie Small death took a toll on everyone. Everyone came into BedStuy to watch him take his final ride through his hood while reciting his hottest music. Pop Smoke will be remembered for his amazing accomplishments.
