Three interesting tidbits from the experiential space.

Meow Wolf Billboard Las Vegas, NV
  • This will be the year immersive art venues go mainstream in the lexicon with planned openings of two new Meow Wolf venues in Denver and Las Vegas, Dreamscapes in Salt Lake City and a slew of exhibits from TeamLab to name a few. These venues will showcase some of the best immersive artists in the world doing what they do best, enveloping their audiences in a multi-sensory experience that inspires awe and play in adults and kids alike. I see these experiences changing the perception of what art and entertainment can be. Museums and galleries say don’t touch, movies request quiet, amusement parks place you in a queue and malls are just plain. Take away each of those barriers, sprinkle in some vivid imagination and you’re presented with spaces that are created full of spontaneous delight, moments of triumph and prolonged curiosity for audiences to interact with at their own pace, on their own terms. I’ve visited the original Meow Wolf and am excited to visit these spots as soon as it’s safe to do so.
  • Most tentpole events and large gatherings will continue to be virtual or postponed until Covid is under better control. Events that normally draw crowds in the hundreds of thousands like CES, SXSW and Sundance Film Festival are planning for virtual experiences while many of the biggest cultural events in the world like Up Helly Aa, Sapporo Snow Festival and Carnival are also moving online or postponing with the hope of a more Covid free environment later in the year or 2022. In 2020 many large events were able to pivot quickly to virtual formats, but they were caught off guard and the quality of the experience was underwhelming. Now with a year or more to prepare, I see many of these large events dramatically improving their virtual experience and providing unique and tailored virtual events to attendees. Kick Zoom fatigue to the curb and look for innovations that make virtual, AR and hybrid events fresh this year.
