Adam Driver in the film “Megalopolis” directed by Francis Ford Coppola
Megalopolis/ Cannes Film Festival

Let’s start with this — I haven’t seen director Francis Ford Coppola’s new epic Megalopolis. If only.

The film, starring Adam Driver, Laurence Fishburne, Aubrey Plaza and lots more, just had a splashy premiere at the Cannes Film Festival, and, for some reason, I was not invited. The mail these days, am I right?

I have seen the trailer —

Whoa. OK. New York City, imperial Rome, statues that move, the collapse of empire, the end of days, It’s big. It’s out there. I mean, sure why not?

You go, Francis.

Francis Ford Freaking Coppola has more than earned the right to funnel a reported $120 million of his own money into whatever weird-ass colossus he wants to make. Like, for instance, this thing.

He’s been developing this movie since the 80’s so to say expectations at Cannes were raised would be a teensy understatement.
