Social influencers.

When I was a kid, this term didn’t exist. The closest thing we had to social influencers were commercials that featured a giant pitcher of Kool-Aid that burst through building walls, and a tiny guy in a boat floating in our toilet.

I’ve been an Internet presence since around 2008 when I had a blog named “Mental Poo.” Blogs were the big thing those days and — if you’ve been paying attention — you’re reading an offshoot of one right now.

People had entertainment blogs, comedy blogs, therapy blogs, poetry blogs, travel blogs, and even sex blogs. It was a platform where writers could type their thoughts daily and have an audience to read them, just like I have here on Medium.

Then along came MySpace, Facebook, Twitter (now “X”), Instagram, Cameo, TikTok, Pinterest and YouTube. As far as blogs were concerned, these new platforms were akin to Nirvana showing up during the hair metal days of the 80s, and blogs soon became…
