The data swirling around on the internet about mixed-race marriages is mind-boggling. I dived into that pool and did not come out for hours — first, a little background on why I am researching mixed-race marriages.

We Were Doing Black-on-Black Marriage

In our family, there are mixed-race ancestors in the Silent Generation and, of course, during slavery, but no mixed-race marriages exist in the Boomer or the Generation X generations. It was strictly Black-on-Black crime.

When we tried to question the older generation about why Aunt Keke was obviously ½ white, they would admit she was ½ white but refuse to tell us how that happened in the middle of a marriage. When we asked why they preferred we date Black — the answer was, “Shut up and don’t bring any white people home.” So, we did not dare.

My mother’s father was ½ White, but he would not talk about it. Grandfather was smack dab in the middle of eight children, who were all as dark as blackberries as were their parents. He had a handsome, tall appearance and had a very light complexion. He would feel insulted if Black people called him…
