I’ve started this piece at least a dozen times and backed away. It’s not fun to relive emotional drama. But, confusion around abortion rights and reproductive care needs to be cleared up.

People opposed to elective abortions must understand the threat to their mothers, sisters, and other women they care about. This examination will not focus on the morality of elective abortions. Instead, the terminology and medical treatment surrounding the diagnostics and treatment of female reproductive care will be explained.

I’ll start with an analogy everyone can understand.

When we bleed from a bad cut, the most important first step is to stop the bleeding. Hormones cause us to respond emotionally to blood loss — adrenaline and cortisol spike — are we in danger? Our heart rate speeds up, generating more blood. We apply pressure. In extreme cases, doctors may need to cauterize — burn — the wound. We’re encouraged to remain calm and deal with the situation to prevent death.
