Accurate control of crane loads is important in offshore operations, especially when the ship is exposed to waves. Also, automatic crane control can help inexperienced crane operators to regain control of the crane load. A requirement for automatic control of cranes is the tracking of the crane load position.

High accuracy tracking of the crane load position can be achieved using computer vision. In addition to the visual tracking of crane loads, the same models and methods have applications in the manufacturing industry. The automatic loading and unloading of produced goods on conveyor trolleys are still performed by manual labor. One reason for this is that the conveyor trolleys are swinging freely around the suspension point of the trolley. This means that a conveyor trolley has the same dynamical behavior as a crane load.

SINTEF and NTNU have research projects aimed at solving these problems.

This talk presents results from recent research for solving these tasks using computer vision.
