Product Development: Tasting Menus in a Buffet World

There are many paths to a successful product. At either end of the spectrum, we have the concepts of less and more.

More standing for added value through features, based on the premise that the end user experience will be improved through complexity.

Less standing for simple, clean experiences stripped of everything except that which adds direct value. They replace can, with should.

There is no wrong choice - only that which is right for the company, in their current situation, at their current point in time.

I am particularly interested in products that remove choice, and provide the user only with information which is absolutely necessary. If we look at this in the context of e-commerce and mass customization we ask ourselves:

How do we move from a catalog driven experience in which we as a user are presented with unlimited options and apply a series of filters to arrive at a product which is “right for us” — to an experience where we as a user state what we are looking for, and are presented a product which answers our problem.

At SOLS I believe we can achieve this by create custom tailored product experiences that span the digital and physical world.

By understanding a medical providers personal preferences, we can fine tune our prescription algorithm to incorporate the repeated, conscience adjustments they are making to our recommended prescription.

By tailoring our messaging and value proposition to a customers profile, we can both span a wider group of customers and markets, awhile at the same time forming more intimate connections with our users.

By generating product which is unique to the individual and responds to their specific needs we can improve customer satisfaction and conversion rates.

By understanding and capturing human: computer interactions in a more honest way we can increase conversions not by quantity, but by quality, and provide respite in a sea of choice.
