A few years ago, we wrote a post about Free Stock Photos that Don’t Suck. That post has been one of our most popular over the years. The fact that people are still finding it using search phrases like “where can I find stock photos that aren’t ugly” and “non-sucky stock photos” would seem to suggest the struggle is real.

As visual marketing has grown (and grown), so too have the resources available to marketers. In the upcoming weeks, we’re going to be sharing a series of posts about upping your visual content game. Today, we’re offering up a handful of new-ish favorite sources for good, free stock photography, as well as some statistics about why you should give a damn.

Visual marketing isn’t a new concept. The logic is rooted in the inner workings of the human mind. When people hear information, they’re likely to remember only 10 percent of that information three days later. However, if a relevant image is paired with that same information, the retention number jumps up to 65 percent. (1)

  • 74 percent of social media marketers use visual assets in their social media marketing.
  • Facebook posts with images see 2.3x more engagement than those without images.
  • Articles with an image placed every 75–100 words receive double the social media shares as articles with fewer images.
  • Tweets with images receive 150 percent more retweets than tweets without images.

Feeling inspired? The list below includes some of our favorite go-to spots for pretty pictures — and be sure to check back on the blog soon. New posts are in the works on sharpening your photo skills and ruling the world from behind your camera. (Okay, fine. Maybe not rule the world, but it will include tips on taking better photos…)
