As you might have seen on the news, Prince Harry is taking part in a race to the South Pole, along with a team of wounded British servicemen and women, in order to raise money for the UK charity Walking With The Wounded.

Since the team will be trekking across the Antarctic in extremely frosty conditions, we thought we’d turn to The Danger Zone: Avoid joining Shackleton’s Polar Expedition! in order to offer a bit of advice.

Although Shackleton’s mad mission to make the first overland crossing of Antarctica via the South Pole was all the way back in 1912, it still provides us with a nifty guide of how to stay alive when things get a bit icy. The South Pole is, after all, certainly place to be caught unawares! With that in mind, here’s some handy expert hints on how to get by in the Antarctic:

“To prevent boredom, set up goalposts on the ice and play football. It’s hard to keep on your feet!”
Build ice cairns and string ropes between them to mark the edge of the camp. Now you can feel your way around in blizzards and not get lost.
Put screws into your boots soles so that they will grip the ice better.
Don’t forget to bring ‘land ice’ with you to melt for drinking. Sea ice is too salty to drink!

Harry, we hope you find this handy guide useful, and indeed any of you lot who are planning a polar expedition any time soon!
