Why You Should Listen When Peter Attia Talks
And the ‘Outlive’ author’s favorite eccentric exercise
Who’s Dr. Peter Attia and why should you care about what he says?
He’s a doctor who says that most medicine today is reactive. We’ve progressed in medicine — we’re no longer letting kids get polio or diphtheria, or letting people die of Type 1 diabetes.
However, nobody worries about the diseases they didn’t get, but the ones they might, like:
- Heart disease
- Diabetes 2
- Cancer
- Brain disease
For the big 4 above, medicine falls flat with its reactive, muddled approach.
Dr Attia has written about it at length in the bestselling book Outlive. I sank into the book this spring and resurfaced to write a story here on Medium.
Why I like him
Dr Attia lives the advice he gives. He’s not a pot-bellied doctor in a tie with cigarette ash on his collar, asking you to do as he said and not do as he did. He is a doctor who gets down and dirty with the dumbbells, did it himself, and worked out as hard as he expected you to work out.
