CONTEXT

Help to solve the big cities mobility problem.

Mobility is becoming a big problem in big cities. Mobility (travel per person in private or public transport and road infrastructure) is a very important aspect as it reflects the quality of life of a city’s population and its productivity. In Mexico City, the vehicular park grows and the public transport is insufficient. Poor mobility generates deep discomfort and is a health and sustainability problem, which is why it has become one of the most polluted cities with serious traffic problems.

One way to help solve the problem would be to reduce the number of cars but without limiting their circulation, using smart mobility options, such as shared car systems or hourly rent, also known as carsharing.

In Mexico City the average speed is 6 km per hour (3.7 mph) and is decreasing at an alarming rate.

In Mexico City 85% of the road space is occupied by cars.

In Mexico there are 27 million registered cars and 70% carry only one person for long distances.

CHALLENGE

Although not a new concept, in Mexico there are only two options of carsharing: Carrot and O2Autocomparte. Hertz also offers hourly rent, which places it in a similar range, so in this version of Field Notes, we will analyze 3 options of carsharing in Mexico City.

The first steps should be simple not to abandon the process. No one wants to wait longer than necessary or fill out endless forms, neither have to call for help. The app must be flawless.

If the app does not work perfectly, why not rely on a website that does? Sometimes the app is the only option to reserve cars.
