“Word-of-Mouth” is still the Best Way to Hire

& How to Harness It Using A Peer-to-Peer Recruitment Platform

A recent survey by SurePayroll Inc. asked how small businesses preferred to recruit their employers and what tools, websites and resources they use.

The answer to the first question was that small business owners recruited 70% by word of mouth referrals compared to the 37% who use traditional job websites such as Indeed or Careerbuilder.

Similarly, for those looking for a job, word-of-mouth is a powerful way to approach job searching because we already have a large network of potential leads from our existing social circles.

To identify these social circles — for both candidates and recruiters — you can first identify your closest social network. These will be your partner, your friends and your closest family members. However, these aren’t the most powerful tool you have. Your most powerful tools are your extended acquaintances and those you can reach through social networks, email or Linkedin.

So who are they? These are your fellow alumni, past colleagues, past mentors and university professors, and your extended network of friends. (these include those random people you met one time at a party, hang-out or a cocktail hour, with whom you keep in touch on social networks but don’t see in real life)

This outer circle is the golden zone and that’s where word-of-mouth thrives.

Now that we know that your network is one of the best ways to find a job or to recruit a candidate- there’s still another problem.

Reaching out individually to hundreds of people in your social network takes effort and is incredibly time consuming. Each person needs the personal touch to reconnect and a descent amount of conversing before you can actually tell them what you want to share.
