A few months ago I attended a presentation by Jay Carmona at the Momentum digital skillshare that totally changed the way I saw trolls and the effect they have on individuals and communities.

I learned that ignoring trolls isn’t the best strategy.

It can make things worse and can push people — especially people of color, women, and queer and trans people — away from our organizing.

Jay is offering the workshop as a free webinar next Thursday. Sign up even if you can’t make the live webinar. We’ll send the recording and materials afterwards to everyone who registers.

Troll Taming 101: Learn how to take back your online community from trolls and create healthy and welcoming online spaces while increasing your communities’ ownership and engagement.

Let’s face it: Internet trolls are a problem. They’re in our online spaces, and they want to sow discord, prevent discussion, planning, and action — and they’re getting more organized. Some believe nothing can be done about trolling, but nothing could be further from the truth. Our online communities are already very equipped to fight trolls on a daily basis, we just need to set up our systems and do a little organizing.

We’ll talk about tactics that work for Facebook pages and groups, website comment threads, discussion boards, and more. These tactics strengthen communities and empowers network members to take back control of their online spaces.
