Building Something To Fail.

Why build something to fail? Or in more lenient terms, why build something that doesn’t portray a hunger for success?

In an article by Erik Duindam, he explains how he capitalised on Jonathan Zarra’s failure to take advantage of his “GoChat” app, which effectively acted as a chat feature for Pokemon Go. What Jonathan Zarra didn’t expect, was the massive growth and demand for the app, with his servers being incapable of handling 1 million users. Due to this, his servers crashed, only to have good old Erik Duindam capitalise on the presented opportunity. Welcome to the world of business.

So why do we do it? Why do we build something to fail?

Is it a lack of belief in ourselves? Or an attitude that we should settle for less, with anything in excess being considered greedy? We have primed ourselves to expect less from given situations, and thus we are unprepared when something goes vastly better than expected.

Is it bad? Not necessarily as it goes hand in hand with being firmly rooted in reality. Just as we may expect less from situations, there is also a danger that we will expect too much.

Nonetheless, if you strive for growth, the ideal system is to build something to scale — coupled with a “never settle” approach.

The Scale Factor

At SEDCO‘s Traineeship induction, Founder Ronan O’Dalaigh had a bit to say about this. He said that he would always build something with the intention of having it scale. Thriftify, while started to address a problem locally, is already preparing itself for scale in the UK market.

What does this mean?

It means that flexibility and the ability to respond to change should be at the core of any enterprise or initiative.

Never Settle

Oneplus’ trademark slogan.

Envisioned in this slogan is a desire to always improve, to always get better, to never settle for less. Part of this may stem from their competitive environment. It is no surprise that the Tech sector is one of the most competitive industries in the world, with all kinds of devices turning obsolete within a moment’s notice.

We’ve now got the same problem with employment, no longer is a first or second-class honour going to secure your position in a firm.

Only Individuals who have a hunger to succeed get rewarded, the same applies for companies.

Never settle when you can strive for so much more.
