Donmar Warehouse’s hit London revival of Christopher Hampton’s Les Liaisons Dangereuses will transfer to Broadway this fall, marking the stage return of Tony Award winners Janet McTeer and Liev Schreiber.

Directed by the Donmar artistic director Josie Rourke, the production begins performances October 8 and opens October 30 at the Booth Theatre. The 15-week limited engagement is scheduled to conclude January 22, 2017.

Choderlos de Laclos’ novel of sex, intrigue and betrayal in pre-revolutionary France produced a scandal when it was first published in 1782. Hampton’s stage adaption, which has been produced on Broadway twice previously, in 1987 and 2008, won both the Olivier and Evening Standard Awards for Best Play when it premiered in a production under the auspices of the RSC. Rourke’s new production will now mark the play’s 30-year revival. The London production was nominated for the Olivier Award for Best Revival.

In the play, former lovers the Marquise de Merteuil (McTeer) and Vicomte de Valmont (Schreiber) now compete in games of seduction and revenge. Merteuil incites Valmont to corrupt the innocent Cécile Volanges before her wedding night but Valmont has targeted the peerlessly virtuous and beautiful Madame de Tourvel. While these merciless aristocrats toy with others’ hearts and reputations, their own may prove more fragile than they supposed.

Other casting is to be announced. Les Liaisons Dangereuses will be produced on Broadway by Arielle Tepper Madover.

The creative team includes Tom Scutt (set and costume designs), Mark Henderson (lighting), Carolyn Downing (sound), Michael Bruce (original music), Richard Ryan (fight director) and Arthur Pita (movement director). Casting is by Caparelliotis Casting. General Management is by 101 Productions, Ltd.
