I am an MBA. I want a startup job.

Me.

I started exploring startup roles for MBAs over five years ago, even before attending Columbia Business School. Since then, I’ve done almost every kind of startup role possible.

I’ve officially been a Product Manager and in Business Development but, given how fluid roles and responsibilities are especially at early-stage startups, I’ve also done ops, marketing, product marketing, enterprise sales, key account management, general management — basically everything other than the CFO or the CTO roll-up.

The struggle.

Its not always clear where an MBA fits in at a startup. Titles are often just flavorsof titles — they really, truly mean different things at different startups. And, as we all know, the only guaranteed thing at a startup is that things will change.

So, if you are an MBA and you want a startup job, check out the below deck on SlideShare. I promise this is the best deck out there on this subject (I’ve looked tirelessly for something that is actually useful!).

The deck covers:

  • A startup org
  • Roles at startups for MBAs (from Sales to Product Management). What are they (really) and what is it like (with comments from my MBA friends at top NYC startups).
  • Recruiting tips and useful frameworks to research the right startup fit
  • Book recommendations

HUGE thank you to my MBA friends who contributed to this deck.

I sincerely hope this is useful.

I struggled a lot and had to hustle like crazy to figure out the things spelled out in this deck.

Good luck fellow MBAs and MBA alumni! The startup world is great, it needs you.

The best thing you can do, not only yourself but for the team that you join, is to know where and how you can make the biggest impact.
