We are excited to announce that we have funded energy startup CalWave Power Technologies Inc.

CalWave, a spin-out of UC Berkeley and Cyclotron Road, provides a solution to harness the renewable power of ocean waves to produce electricity and freshwater. Their initial patented shallow water technology was inspired by the ability of muddy sea floors to absorb over-passing waves. For the US Wave Energy Prize challenge, CalWave advanced its Wave Energy Converter (WEC) to an offshore moored solution, allowing a wider range of applications. The WEC operates while submerged, allowing it to survive stormy seas while causing no visual pollution.

In 2016, CalWave was awarded as the runner-up of the US Wave Energy Prize by exceeding the threshold to double the energy captured from ocean waves compared to the state of the art solutions already available. Since then, CalWave received further support by the National Science Foundation (NSF) and by the US Department of Energy DOE through the SBV program. Back in June 2017, CalWave received a multi-million dollar grant by the DOE with the goal to demonstrate CalWave’s solution in open water.
