Do You Have Career Plan?

Find your path with a career plan

In the book Alice in Wonderland, Alice reaches a crossroads where the Cheshire Cat is sitting. Alice asks the cat: “Which road should I take?” In reply, the cat says: “Where are you going?” To that, Alice says: “I don’t know.” “Then it doesn’t matter which road you take,” the cat says in response.

What’s the moral of this story? As it relates to one’s career, my take is that if you have no career plan then it doesn’t matter what job you take next. Yet with something as significant as your work life and career path, does it really make sense to wander aimlessly from job to job, hoping to earn more money and/or find greater enjoyment, work/life balance, etc.?

Clearly that’s not an ideal approach. Every for-profit business that has enjoyed long-term success started with a business plan and a strategy to achieve their objectives. They didn’t leave it to chance. Before venturing into a new market, launching a new product, making a capital investment, or making an acquisition, these enterprises developed a plan and asked themselves several basic questions while conducting in-depth research. So, shouldn’t anyone launching a career or seeking to advance one do the same thing?

I am frankly surprised by how many people have no career development plan. Some leave it to their employer to create it for them. That is not in itself a bad thing, but it really is incumbent on you to drive that bus, let them know where you want to go and ask for their support. Don’t rely on them to do it; their goals are most likely significantly different than yours and no one knows what you want of a career better than you do.
