On August 25, 2020, I wrote a piece arguing that the Republican party was no longer a political party. The article was in response to the party deciding not to adopt a political platform and instead “enthusiastically support[ed]” the President — namely, Donald J. Trump.

That may not seem surprising — of course political parties endorse their own candidate — but it’s incredibly problematic. Because political parties are supposed to be permanent institutions that embody ideas and ideals and not merely be a temporary faction in support of an individual politician.
