How moderates can win again
All across the world moderates are losing power. This was shown in America, by the victory of Donald Trump and in Britain by Brexit . But, while the influence of moderates may be in decline, the importance of their ideals are not. In this article I will explore various different theories as to how moderates can win back power.
Fighting for what we believe in
The ever increasing power of social media in elections, mean it’s more important than ever to make sure our views are represented online. Yet, due to a vocal minority on the right and the left — the so called ‘deplorables’ and ‘Bernie bro’s’ — many moderates are afraid to express their views for fears of the attacks that they will endure as a result. But in staying silent a vacuum of ideas is being created, which is being filled by those on the ‘alt-left’ and ‘alt-right’. And, social media’s influence will only continue to grow, and those for whom it is the most important factor in deciding how to vote are the future generation, who will shape politics for decades to come.

Communication
Donald Trump’s slogan, ‘Make America Great Again’, courted much controversy, with many responding saying that ‘America is already great’. But for many Americans the slogan resonated strongly, making them think of a better, more simpler time. And, the right have always been good at creating effective slogans, framing tax cuts, as ‘tax relief’, austerity, as ‘living within our means’ and welfare as ‘handouts’. However, the center and center-left often respond to slogans such as these, with lengthy explanations that fail to resonate with voters. Instead we must find ways to concise our views, and make clear what we stand for.
“Don’t let someone tell you this country isn’t great — that we need to make it great again. Because, right now, this country is the greatest country on Earth.” — Michelle Obama
Understanding why we lost power
In trying to understand how to win power, we must learn why people chose to reject moderate solutions in the first place. One of the main reasons moderates have lost recent elections is that people don’t believe the solutions they offer can adequately solve the problems of the 21st century, such as inequality, poverty and declining wages. Opposition to Trump and Brexit alone won’t be enough to win back power, we must also offer bold and innovative solutions to the problems facing society today.
