As a Leader Do You Want to be Liked or Respected?

A mistake some newly minted managers make is wanting to be liked by all their reports. Another is wanting them to all be happy, which of course isn’t their job but also impossible to achieve. But back to the first mistake; wanting them to like you. I recall hearing a newly hired manager say “I am not here to make new friends. I had plenty of friends when I took this job and they’ll be there when I leave it.

That’s not to say you can be a jerk. Certainly, you should treat your people with respect. And being friendly and pleasant isn’t a bad thing. Just remind yourself regularly that having their trust and support in achieving team goals is what’s most important. And developing them is your top KPI. In the end, being a leader isn’t a popularity contest, it’s a calling and a privilege.
