Complex and innovative projects require the participation of driven individuals with a broad set of skills, combined with a deep understanding of the field, and a core of highly developed human qualities. Moonshots, for their very nature, call for a team of such individuals to make them possible. Mr. Sorkhabi, founder of function(core), the transdisciplinary team behind ExHasta, embodies the spirit of one of these 21st renaissance men and women. He can be best described as a human catalyst, an agent of change and dynamism that seats comfortably at the edge of development.

Elburz Sorkhabi

The journey of a human catalyst

A starting note

For Mr. Sorkhabi, it all began with classical music. As a scholarship holder at the Faculty of Music of the University of Toronto, he developed exceptional discipline and commitment to artistry. Despite being a successful performer, he yearned for something more.

Technological artist

Combining his artistic background with his innate passion for technology, he founded nVoid in 2011, a company that has designed and developed high-tech creative solutions around the globe for leading companies (that include Google and Nike). At nVoid, Mr. Sorkhabi deployed workshops around the world, while also authoring “An Introduction to TouchDesigner”, the first ever book on the now widely popular development platform. In June, 2016, nVoid was brought under the umbrella of ZERO11ZERO, an ecosystem that aims to create compelling narratives using the latest media tools and content mediums with a strong artistic sense. As their Immersive Technical Director, Mr. Sorkhabi has used his experience, skills and technology to reach an ever growing number of people, companies and institutions, working on a wider spectrum of project types. It was also in 2016 that he founded function(core), to aggressively merge his skills, experience, technology and the people he has worked with, with the aim to make world a better place.

function(core): a team to build the future

function(core) is a collaborative international effort, taken on by remotely-working scientists, engineers, musicians, actors, writers, creative technologists and more. Here, Mr. Sorkhabi is in his natural environment and has, in a way, been able to imbue the company with his man-of-all-trades spirit. The company aims to impact a billion people by 2021 with innovative technology applied to a seemingly boundless range of fields.

From AI-powered public transit systems to high-transparency social banking, through STEAM education (“Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Maths”), and ranging from health apps to instances of Internet of Energy, function(core) and Mr. Sorkhabi fight in all fronts of development. Their team is flexible and its structure malleable, and can accommodate different approaches and organizational methods to tackle each problem as unique as its solution. International, multilinguistic, transdisciplinary. Diversity and flexibility seem, ironically, to be their trademark characteristics. This is how they aim to comply with the tremendously high standard Mr. Sorkhabi has set for their impact in the world. And it is impact he aims for.

All about impact

This impact-driven innovation efforts have found a natural place in ExHasta and its Moonshot technology development. Moonshot projects are (and, in a sense, must be) the bread and butter of the function(core) team. In Mr. Sorkhabi’s own words, they’re a perfect fit because they’re “difficult, explosive and powerful”. Moonshot projects are quite difficult to develop and implement, and it´s fitting for the high-caliber team involved to undertake such tasks. They are also explosive: behind the creation of the ExHasta platform lies the power of intellectual property distribution (through blockchain and network effects) to arm innovators around the globe with disruptive tools and tech, so as to maximize the effort-reach ratio. This is the only way to meet Mr. Sorkhabi’s one billion people mark.

Finally, the reason Moonshot projects are only natural to Mr. Sorkhabi, the function(core) team and ExHasta is because they’re powerful. By deploying technologies in specific regions through the regions’ own innovators, development and progress break outside of the frontiers of the most wealthy parts of the globe, to bring real change to under-resourced regions. With the latest technology, the distribution of intellectual property at extremely low costs, and the education of these innovators, through ExHasta, Mr. Sorkhabi and the function(core) team aim to empower individuals around the world, and turn the most people they can into catalysts of change and progress.
