BIRMINGHAM — On Saturday, November 18th, at 10:00 a.m. at Tabernacle Baptist Church, 600 Center St. N., Alabama faith and moral leaders will hold a press conference to call on Alabama Christians, clergy, and people of moral conscience to condemn Roy Moore’s immoral public policy agenda. Local leaders have asked the Rev. Dr. William J. Barber, II, president and senior lecturer of Repairers of the Breach and co-chair of the Poor People’s Campaign: A National Call For Moral Revival to join in this call. He will be accompanied by the Rev. Dr. Liz Theoharis, co-director of the Kairos Center for Religion, Rights, and Social Justice and co-chair of the Poor People’s Campaign: A National Call For Moral Revival.

The Washington Post recently reported allegations that Roy Moore, a candidate for U.S. Senate, harassed and assaulted multiple young women, including a 14-year-old girl. In addition to these allegations, Roy Moore has embraced public policy attacks on the poor, women, children and other vulnerable communities.

  • Roy Moore is against the expansion of medicaid through the Affordable Care Act, which would provide over 400,000 poor and working poor Alabamians with access to care.
  • Roy Moore is a proponent of the state’s racist and immoral voter ID law and voter suppression tactics, which deny hundreds of thousands of poor and vulnerable Alabamians voting access.
  • Roy Moore is against non-discrimination protections for LGBTQ people and promotes homophobia and transphobia, which contribute to a culture of youth homelessness, youth suicide, bullying, and violence towards LGBTQ people.
  • Roy Moore is against living wages, in a state with over 4 million people living in poverty, including one in four children.

“Long before the accusations he’s struggled to deny, Roy Moore has engaged in policy pedophilia, backing attacks on healthcare, immigrants, LGBTQ youth, and gun control that endanger vulnerable children,” said Rev. Dr. Barber. “This US Senate race is important to the nation because, like George Wallace in his day, Roy Moore wants to nationalize his dangerous politics, which should be troubling to all people of conscience regardless of color, gender, party, or belief. We are challenging Alabama Christians and people of moral conscience to embrace the prophetic moral center and stand up against this extreme Republican religionist,” he said.

The press conference takes place a day before a “Moral Revival Mass Meeting” happening Sunday, Nov. 19th, at 4:30 p.m. at Tabernacle Baptist Church, 600 Center St. N. The Alabama Moral Revival Mass Meeting is the 13th stop on a national Moral Revival Mass Meeting and Public Events tour organized by “The Poor People’s Campaign: A National Call For Moral Revival.” This multi-state movement is led by Repairers of the Breach, the Kairos Center For Religion, Rights, and Social Justice, Greater Birmingham Ministries, and hundreds of grassroots community and religious leaders, organizations, and movements fighting to end systemic racism, poverty, the war economy, environmental destruction, and other injustices.
