Roster News: Braun on Bereavement, Outfielder Recalled

Prior to Thursday night’s game in Arizona, the Brewers announced that Ryan Braun had left the team and was placed on the bereavement list.

That list carries with it a minimum of three days off the roster and a maximum of seven. With just four games left before the All-Star break, one would think that Braun would miss them all. Why bother to return for one game after in the middle of what could be a full week with your convalescing family member?

Because that’s the thing, conspiracy theorists, you can’t just go on bereavement. The move has to be approved by the commissioner’s office. And while the easy joke is “Since when does the commissioner’s office require proof to act regarding Ryan Braun?”, the fact remains that someone must be in either a emergent or life-threatening medical situation, or have died, among those people approved to take this kind of leave.

So after playing just one game since coming off the disabled list, Braun is out.

Taking his place on the roster will be left fielder Khris Davis.

Davis broke camp with the Brewers this season, you may recall, but couldn’t really capitalize on the very strong numbers he posted in Cactus League play.

Since returning to the Nashville Sounds following his May 1st option, Davis has posted the following numbers:

64 G, 224 AB, .250/.346/.455, 30 R, 56 H, 11 2B, 1 3B, 11 HR, 29 RBI, 6 SB, 29 BB, 51 K

As a right-handed hitter, there’s even a chance that he could start Friday night’s game against the lefty Arizona will send to the hill.
