“Stop Killing Us”

Stop killing us!
Stop killing us!
I’m screaming it at the top of my lungs
‘Till all my air is gone
‘Till my lungs are empty
But my heart’s still heavy
Why do I have to scream it in the first place?

Our blood spills on the pavement
Crimson red trickling down your streets
Then you still listen to our beats
Still try to learn how to vogue
Man, I just might go rogue
Filled to the brim with anger
Momma told me not to hate,
But how can I not
When our corpses pile up in one spot?

Stop killing us!
Stop killing us!
Stop killing black trans women
Just because you can’t handle their bravery
Their beauty
Because they confuse you
Because your “boys” joke and call you gay
Maybe your God made you that way

Trans women are women
It’s as simple as that
I’m just stating facts
Stop stealing their lives
I don’t know how many tears my community has cried

Heavy hearts all around the world
They had barely gotten to live yet
And you snatched it from ‘em
Then you walked free
I think it's your heart that deserves to bleed
I think it’s you that deserves that pain
That fear
As life spills from your body
As you die alone
In a cold alley
In a dumpster
In an apartment
Damn, Brian, stop it!
I can’t help it
My heart is melting
With rage

Stop killing us!
My voice is cracked and hoarse
Tears fall from my eyes
I don’t know how many times
We’ll have to say it
Stop killing us!
Stop killing our friends!
Our sisters!
Our community!

We’re a war
Casualties piling up
But y’all don’t seem to give a fuck
’Cause it don’t concern you, right?
What if it was your sister
Who died from the sharpness of a knife?
From hollow tips tearing into her flesh?
From someone with eyes full of nothing but hatred?
What if it was your mom?
Your best friend?
Your girlfriend?
Your wife?
Who had to die
Because someone was full of so much bitter hatred
That they just couldn’t take it
What if….?

Stop killing us!
Stop killing us!
I’m screaming at the top of my lungs
STOP KILLING US!

The woman pictured above is Tonya Harvey, a young black trans woman that was recently killed. I don’t have the emotional energy to cover her story because it just…hurts so bad. Why do they keep killing our black trans women? My mind keeps replaying that question over and over. I can’t cover these stories. I just can’t. So instead, I’ll leave a link and I highly suggest you read it. These women do not deserve to be forgotten. Say their names. Remember them. Stand up for them and the trans women that are still living and fighting today. Support them. Show up for them.

Recently, a man used my name as if it were a weapon. I am who I am, and this is my journey.
