“When You Marry Someone Else”

A Poem

When you marry someone else
Just know I’m not coming
I’m not flying in
I’m not getting buttoned up in my best dressed
I wish you the best,
But I’m not walking in
Don’t even tell me what day it is
Cause I’ll be too busy sleeping in
Then making my favorite waffles
To go with my noon coffee
Blasting my favorite artist
Who luckily never ended up on a playlist
I created, then played
Just for you
Thinking of us two
And something called “forever”

When you marry someone else
Just know
I won’t be in the crowd
I won’t be around
My head’s stuck in the clouds
And I’m too preoccupied to come down
I know you love me
Hell — I love you too
But what’s a man to do
When he spent a chunk of his life
Chasing after you?

I won’t be there
But I’m sure you’ll find someone
To take my seat
When you marry some else
I hope they can love you
Better than me
I hope they can give you
Everything you need
I won’t be in the crowd
But I hope he makes you happy
