If you live in Ireland, Daffodil Day has probably become one of those days that hits you every year with mixed feelings. On the one hand, it’s heartwarming to see an entire country participate in the largest single fundraising activity organised by the Irish Cancer Society. People express their support in incredibly creative ways, all just as smile-worthy as another. On the other hand, it’s a sad reminder that we live in a world where we have to do this. A world where one of the most devastating illnesses of our times gets less funding than so many other, infinitely less important things, and thus events like these need to be organised to remember that cancer is very real, it can affect anyone and everything from research to education and services needs people’s support. People like you and me.

I dedicate this article to my father, who has been suffering from cancer for the last eight years. He’s a fighter, but sadly, we’ve all had to accept the inevitable reality lurking around the corner. He’s in good spirits though, and that helps us accept reality a little bit easier, so I will try to keep the tone of this little article as upbeat as possible.
