January 2024 was most likely — as it always is — for most people, the time to make New Year’s resolutions. I do no such thing. Instead, I rocked up to the LEGO store, like any conscientious LEGO fan would, and scored myself a few new sets. Two of those are buildable cameras. The one that I was really excited about, and so were many other fans, is the instant Polaroid 1000, a brick-built replica that even works. Kind of. The other one is a non-licensed, aka generic, fixed lens camera from the Creator theme. As you’ll see, they’re both fantastic sets, and dare I say, the latter might even prove to be the better deal.

Why LEGO cameras, though?

I can only speak for myself, but cameras in general are something I have been drawn to since childhood. I remember my mother showing me her Smena. It came with a built-in case and felt really magical and rugged at the same time. The latter was because, frankly, everything made in the Soviet Union was made to feel rugged and indestructible. The former because light is magic in some ways, and using it to create memories, be that in static or dynamic form, is pretty mind-blowing, even when you understand the technology.
