To Skip Or Not To Skip The M3 MacBook Air?

The $1000 question, and this time it’s definitely worth asking…

Typing this story on the M2 Air, then publishing it on the M3 Max, makes you wonder whether the M3 Air has any place in any workflow, if you own either of these machines already? Chances are it doesn’t, but as always, Apple managed to squeeze a few quietly released features into the new M3 Air, that makes even someone sitting with multiple Mac generations on their desk, consider the upgrade. But, you might not need to. Heck, I might even convince myself by the end of this article to keep my money, and save it for the Vision Pro.

Not quite the same Air, is it?

If you decide to do a quick comparison between the M2 Air, the M3 Air and the M3 in the Pro body, just like I did, you’ll find yourself struggling to see the point of at least one of those models. The M3 air sits between its older sibling and its “Pro-er” — if that’s even a word — self, and you’ll be scrolling for a while to find any notable differences and even then, you won’t be convinced, and I won’t blame you.

While hardware accelerated ray tracing is pretty darn useful when playing games, just how many games and for how long is one planning to play on a MacBook Air? It is a fanless design after all, so mid-level…
