Bricology. The art and science of bricolage.

Bricolage. The practice of transforming “found” materials by incorporating them into a new work.

I can’t remember what I was reading when I first encountered the word bricolage, but I’ve never been able to forget the word itself. It’s appearance. Sound. Peculiarity. A word that refers to the process of improvisation. A word derived from a French term that means “to tinker.” A word used to describe approaches to music, visual art, philosophy, education, business and beyond. A word that contains an imaginative and practical potency for whatever it’s applied to.

Including life.

At least that’s how I see it and why I am borrowing the term for this exploratory project.

To unpack this a bit let’s revisit the definition shared above: “The practice of transforming ‘found’ materials by incorporating them into a new work.”

Life is indeed a collection of found materials, appearing in the people, places and experiences that make up our days. And to live, or make a living in the truest sense, is the result of what we do with those materials and the things they teach us, or cause us to learn, about ourselves, one another and the world.

For we are all assembling a life for the here and now and beyond. A new work fashioned from each moment, wether notable or mundane. And this project is an attempt to pay attention to such. A place to scribble out questions, observations, stories, experiments and points of incorporating action along the way. A place to note the bricolage of living.
