Yep, Tracy Anderson and I go way back and this is one of my go-to workouts these days! Photo by author.

Right now is a test for all of us.

How resourceful can we be? How can we turn to our deepest inner selves to find the strength we need to get through the next few months?

Your challenge during this time may not just be dealing with whatever wreckage the coronavirus made of your future, though that’s certainly omnipresent.

Maybe you’re 100 percent certain that you’ve got to end a bad relationship. Or drowning in debt. Perhaps you’re mindlessly eating to tune out the world’s turbulence.

Here’s the thing: You don’t necessarily have to buy something or do something external to remedy any of this. Instead, think about what you already have, the resources right in front of you. And build something new.

I am not happy about having so much debt leftover from my divorce because my ex-husband decided to make things as ugly and expensive as possible and because I was ignorant about how I managed my money the first year of being on my own. Right now, with more time at home, I’m tapping into my existing network to line up some additional freelance work and to continue to create multiple streams of income during long hours at night when I’m home alone and feeling restless.

I’m also tired of looking at my body in the mirror and mourning the toned muscles I used to have. I just dusted off an old exercise DVD I already own and used to do years ago — yep, I’m one of those dinosaurs who still owns a DVD player — and did the abs section this morning. I’m also going to try some free, streamed exercise classes this week.

The other night, I felt uninspired by cooking. I dug deep into my pantry and found a can of artichoke hearts. I used them to create a delicious homemade vegetable pizza with a leftover sauteed leek, frozen broccoli, and tomato sauce mixed with a tiny bit of harissa for heat. It was so damn delicious and chock full of delicious healthy ingredients.

I don’t have a ton of extra income but I did donate $25 to Letters of Love and plan on using my obscene amount of existing art supplies to create some thoughtful letters for people who are all alone in nursing homes. This is a creative activity that will keep me calm and make me feel like I’m doing something to give back.
