This Day Is New: How a Walk and Maya Angelou’s Wisdom Changed My Mindset
Finding joy in the ordinary by embracing each day as a unique gift
“This is a wonderful day. I’ve never seen this one before.” Maya Angelou
Yesterday, walking in the rain, everything felt wrong. Just for a moment, you understand. It was humid. So I was hot and sticky. The hazy rainfall added to my discomfort, and my young dog tugged at his leash, straining my arm muscles.
“What awful weather,” said a passerby, and I agreed.
But a little inner voice piped up, saying not to agree with negativity because it increased unpleasantness.
And I knew the voice was right. When we confirm others’ negativity, we add to it. We help it build. What’s more, their Debbie Downer mindset transfers to us. Now, we’re both on the negativity treadmill.
Self-talk rose again:
At any given moment, you have a choice about how to see the situation.
So true, and these sentiments reminded me of a quote from the inspirational author Maya Angelou: “This is a wonderful day. I’ve never seen this one before.”
