Open Calls at Blast Theory and The Spire — The Selected Artists
We are delighted to announce the two artists who have been selected from our open calls for BDF18.
First up, we welcome, Rhiannon Armstong, who was awarded the residency we are providing in partnership with local artist’s group Blast Theory. Rhiannon will spend six weeks at Blast Theory’s studios in the run up to and during Brighton Digital Festival 2018.
This unique residency programme is initiated and run by the three founding artists of Blast Theory, with the support of Brighton Digital Festival. It will provide Rhiannon with a space and uninterrupted time to research and develop her work in a supportive and creative environment.
‘I wish to engage deeply with critical thinking and the artistic landscape around digital arts and Brighton Digital Festival. I want to consider both online dissemination and large-scale projection in the built environment as forms of intervention in public space, and this residency is the perfect context to help me work through that’ Rhiannon Armstrong
Our second successful artist is, Thomas Buckley, who was awarded the commission we are offering in collaboration with The Spire to produce a piece of digital artwork for Brighton Digital Festival 2018. Thomas will be developing the work in a two-week residence at The Spire preceding the commencement of the Festival. Thomas’ installation will be on show at The Spire from 20–30 September.
‘I’m delighted to have been awarded the commission. My first introduction to digital art was in 2014 at Pop-Up Brighton’s BYOB (Bring Your Own Beamer) event for Brighton Digital Festival. Since then the Festival has given me a place to experiment, gain advice from industry leaders within Brighton and a perspective on the digital art world. I’m very proud to have started making installation work with Brighton Digital Festival and very excited to now be given the chance to show how powerful the Festival is in developing the skills and careers of Brighton’s digitally inclined’ Thomas Buckley
We are very excited to see Rhiannon’s and Thomas’ proposals come to life for BDF18!
‘At Brighton Digital Festival, we’re committed to making opportunities available to artists through open calls for projects and residencies. Reading the submissions is always instructive and I think in Thomas and Rhiannon we’ve found two exceptional talents that will make a great contribution to this year’s Festival’ Laurence Hill, Festival Director
