Just ahead of the first BDF Town Hall meeting, we wanted to share some details of the commissioned arts and education programme, which was the basis of the funding the festival is receiving from Arts Council England.

Much of this programming was made with a view to broadening the audience for the festival and ensuring that we are taking learning and creative opportunities out of the city centre. We also want to pay attention to the voices of those who may not be heard in the development of our digital future.

Umbrellium: An arts and design agency, with an international track record will deliver a large-scale, outdoor participation project in the city. They will collaborate with the community over 15 months to create the work for 2018.

Blast Theory: The acclaimed artist group will host two artist residencies offering 6 weeks of accommodation, access to Blast Theory artists and equipment, leading to a show and tell during the festival. This professional development opportunity will be offered through an open call.

University of Brighton: Their new state of the art sensor lab will host two residencies focused on Internet of Place research and co-working with local SMEs. This professional development opportunity will be offered through an open call.

We will also partner with the University and Brighton and Hove City Council on the delivery of a public digital art piece for the Moulsecombe campus. This opportunity will be offered through an open call.

British Science Festival: We are going to cocommission a new work with BSF to run through their festival an ours. The call for this is out now, read more here, deadline 24.4.17

Lumen Prize: We are collaborating with the prestigious Lumen Prize and will create a group show of this year’s winners immediately after the prizes are announced in mid-September.

Research Council UK: We will bring together a researcher, an artist, a developer and a small group of BME young people to explore their experience of online spaces and whether an online space by and for themselves might have offline implications.

CuspInc: Following an event in BDF16 about artists using digital media to explore and deal with chronic pain we will work with artists on events about the impact of digital, good or bad, on our mental health.

Our Future City: Recognising their commitment to offering alternative routes into employment and ours to ensure we create opportunities for all, we will build on our Level Up programme by running a series of short courses culminating in a 3-week summer school in August 2018. Among participants will be those identified as pre-NEETs.

Exploring Senses: Will develop a mobile maker lab, to be taken out to libraries in communities outside the city centre and enable young people to create with 3D pens and conductive ink among other things.

Brighton Photo Biennial: We will partner on a co-commission for the 2018 edition — details to be decided depending on their theme.

These are the events we are able to fund based on the support received from ACE and our sponsors. We are still looking to commission further work and are always interested to hear ideas but we will have to fundraise separately for anything else that we want to do. We’ll keep this post updated as we programme new events.
