What is marathon swimming?

A marathon swim is at least 10km (6.2 mi), using only a swimsuit (no wetsuit), non-neoprene cap, goggles, and grease. This distance was chosen for equivalence in time-to-completion to a 26.2-mi marathon run. By this standard, the English Channel is equivalent to 3+ marathons or what I like to call, the “Everest” of swims.

Here are snapshots of my previous marathon swims, with my third attempt tomorrow (Lake Tahoe 10.5 mi)!

  1. 2012 Boston Harbor | 8mi | 65 degrees | 3:03
First East Coast marathon swim

2. 2014 Potomac | 10.6mi | 70 degrees | 5:36

Intense chop, only 8 out of 40 finished

Other marathon distance pool swims include:

2011 | 2012 | 2013 | 2014 Cambridge Masters’ annual 100 x 100’s
