The poem by an unknown writer centers around Christian theology and Christ’s sacrifice for his followers. The selfless hero is depicted as a savior for the human race. Beautifully described as a heroic and religious figure, Christ is crucified on a cross, also known as a rood. I believe it is written from the perspective of a devout follower of Christianity, simply because of the pious diction he creates. The cross is described as being covered in jewels and gold. It is seen as showing wealth. Something which is used as an object to help kill Jesus Christ is emphasized as being rich or covered in luxury. The poem shows the tumultuous difficulty of self-sacrifice. A religious figure like Christ surpasses what is known as being gracious. The anonymous poet conveys a deeper love and understanding of his messiah while giving out a major reason why he should be loved by all. This gracious event is enough to show how Christ is held at the highest position in the perspective of the writer. The writer ends by saying “He gave us life” and “Hope was renewed”. Only one kind, yet difficult act from the prophet is enough to understand the connection he has with those who follow the word of god. From this simple poem, we can assume that the writer has a desire to show his audience that Christ deserves an immense amount of appreciation.
