This poem interprets a dream to attract Anglo-Saxon pagans to Christianism. It explains what Jesus went through in the crucifixion and the perspective of the cross that faithfully die with him. The crucifixion symbolizes the battles in life and sacrifices we must make, but the resurrection is the victory over all does battles.

The dreamer describes the cross as a beautiful tree that selflessly was sacrificed to be a companion to Jesus. They both suffer unmeasurable pain, they stood together fighting like great warriors until both die, but by the power of resurrection, Christ rewarded the cross with a heavenly place and the most beautiful jewels.
