Why Does Evil Exist?

I believe evil exists for many reasons. Everyone at one point in time has met a person who is nice. They do nice things for others or just act optimistic towards negative situations. But has anyone ever met someone in their life who reeks of evil? The term evil has many masks people wear. Selfish, egotistical, greedy and deceitful to name a few. Someone who is selfish only cares about themselves and doesn’t consider others. Egotistical people will constantly talk your ear off about themselves and will fail to mention anyone else. Greedy people will crave power or money and will not stop under any circumstances until they get what they want even if that means hurting people in the process. Lastly, deceitful people lie to others and give them false information to either help themselves or to hurt the other person. Evil exists in many ways, but nonetheless the impact it has on the other person still hurts the same way.

The other reason evil exists is the balance between good and evil. I feel like everything has a polar opposite. Sad and happy, love and hate, big and small etc. Good is the definition of, “That which is morally right; righteousness”. Good is the polar opposite of Evil and in order to keep the balance you’re going to have evil people along with some of the best people. Good cannot exist without evil existing. You can’t consider people good without having the evil to compare them to. For example, someone who’s constantly donating to charity, volunteering at shelters and helping others in need could consider them overall a good person. On the other hand there’s a person who only thinks about themselves and never the potential negative outcome, will only lie to get their way and throw people under the bus if that meant saving themselves. Wouldn’t you consider that evil? If there was a good and no evil or no evil and just good how could you determine who was one or the other?
