The Unforgotten fifth series finale, scheduled to hit television screens on Monday, 3 April 2023, will likely have fans on the edge of their seats for the entire instalment.

Unforgotten, in early March, returned to British television screens with yet another mid-blowing case for the detectives to solve. The latest series, having premiered on Monday, 27 February 2023, came to television screens a full two years after the fourth series finale. The fifth series was very much worth the wait.

Sinéad Keenan, playing DCI Jessica ‘Jessie’ James, joined the Unforgotten main cast for the fifth series. Series fans, after DCI Cassandra ‘Cassie’ Stuart’s death, were expecting Sanjeev Bhaskar’s Detective Inspector Sunil ‘Sunny’ Khan to take the lead on future investigations.

Nicola Walker, best known for the long running television series Spooks (MI-5 in the United States), exited Unforgiven with her character’s death. Walker’s exit, after playing DCI Cassandra ‘Cassie’ Stuart for four series, was shocking to Unforgotten fans. The fourth series finale, televised in the British Isles on Monday, 29 March 2021, was emotionally draining for some viewers.

Fifth Series Episode Synopsis…

Episode 1…

When a severed leg is discovered inside a chimney the team get to work identifying the victim. Cassie’s replacement has a rocky start as she clashes with a grieving Sunny.

Episode 2…

The team identify the body found in the chimney flue as forensics reveal the cause of death was by gunshot. Jess and Sunny visit the victim’s mother to break the devastating news. They find the pair had a tumultuous relationship.

Episode 3…

The victim’s turbulent past comes to light and leads the team in unexpected directions. While Sunny takes a trip to Paris and Jess drops in on an unsuspecting Lord, the pair continue to butt heads as progress on the case moves slowly.

Episode 4…

Sunny and Jess’s personal lives go from bad to worse while they struggle to keep focused on the case. Meanwhile, the suspect list grows and the victim’s mother and son are put under the microscope after holes in their stories come to light.

Episode 5…

Sunny and Jess get closer to the truth of what happened on the night Precious was murdered, but after an anonymous call a shocking discovery turns the case upside down. The suspects must decide if they should keep running or face the truth.

Episode 6…

When a second victim is linked to the case the team are now confronted with the possibility of a double murder. Jess and Sunny must now decipher which of the suspects are telling the truth so justice can finally be served.

The fifth series, further to Keenan and Bhaskar, also stars Jordan Long, Pippa Nixon, Colin R. Campbell, Carolina Main, Georgia Mackenzie, Michelle Bonnard, Andrew Lancel, and Kate Robbins. The main cast, greatly diminished but still providing some of their finest work, is unquestionably brilliant.

Unforgotten, like mirroring the previous four series, features some of the best guest talent available. The guest talent is every bit as important to Unforgotten as the main cast because, if you’re familiar with the drama, it is these people that make the story work. The fifth series guest cast members include Ian McElhinney, Hayley Mills, Martina Laird, Mark Frost, Max Rinehart, Rhys Yates, Hebe Beardsall, Andrew Lancel, and Mark Oosterveen.

Walker, with the fourth series finale, wasn’t the only talent to exit Unforgotten. Lewis Reeves, Peter Egan, and Jassa Ahluwalia, respectively playing DC Jake Collier, Martin Hughes, and Adam Stuart, are no longer with Unforgotten cast. Alastair MacKenzie and Janet Dibley, respectively playing ex-DCI John Bentley and Jenny, was part of the Unforgiven cast for two of the four previous series.
