The Tragedy of Macbeth, adapted and directed by Joel Coen, sees two-time Academy Award winning actor Denzel Washington portray William Shakespeare’s Macbeth. The latest adaptation, filmed in black and white, possesses an ineffable atmospheric tension.
The stage play, frequently referenced as “The Scottish Play”, is believed to have been first performed as early as 1606. Washington, more than four centuries later, honours The Bard’s words. Many actors, most noteably Orson Welles, Sir Ian Mckellen, Sir Patrick Stewart, and Sir Kenneth Branagh, have played the Thane of Glamis.
