4) The smallest fly in the world is from Thailand

An euryplateananaknihali’ is just 0.4 millimetres long and so small that it can actually live on an ant.

Scientists found in Thailand what they believe to be the smallest fly ever identified.

It’s no bigger than 0.4 millimeters in length and is at least 5 times smaller than the average fruit fly, one of the most common types of flies in the world.

The scientists believe that this species represents a big threat for ants. The Phoridae family, which this fly belongs to, is a parasite of the ants, well known for decapitating its hostess.

These flies lay eggs into the ant’s body. The larvae feed from the ant’s body, and end up beheading the ant in reverse. In the US, these kinds of flies are being used to fight ant problems.
