Did you know that Budapest was once two cities? There was Buda on the west bank of the Danube, and Pest on the east bank. The two side’s still have a completely different vibe. Buda is the bougie part with many parks while Pest is much more lively and also a bit hipster!

Budapest, the capital of Hungary is a cosmopolitan, trendy and really cool city. I’m pretty sure that you will find something to explore once you decide on visiting the city. From nightlife to gourmet tours, from design to architecture- it’s just so much to discover! So here’s my list on the MUST DOs in this awesome city!

  1. Party district- no excuses

There’s something about Budapest where you will never feel bored. Especially when it comes to nightlife- it’s full of character! Budapest’s nightlife scene is centered in the Quarter of District VII where you will find the laid back ‘ruin’ bars, the trendiest spots in the city for drink and chat. The interior consists nothing more than worn-down pieces of furniture- most commonly from the past era- that creates a kind of psychedelic atmosphere. I recommend you to explore streets such as Kazinczy, Király, Dob with its most famous ’ruin’ pubs like Szimpla, Ellátó and Fogasház.

2. Live music experience

If you are looking for a stylish and lively place to have some fun, go to A38 and try a Random Trip night! A38 is the reincarnation of a Ukrainian stone-carrier ship docked on the Buda-side of the Danube and is voted as one of the best bars in the world. No wonder- it feels very cool to dance over the river. It doesn’t really matter whether you are there for a party or just for a few drinks with your friends, you will always have a good time! During summer the venue hosts a roof terrace as well that is pretty cool!

3. Unique flea markets

What about daytime? For a really unique experience visiting a flea market is among the best choices. Roaming around the market and looking at the numerous little treasures is definitely off the beaten tourist track.
The Ecseri flea market is the largest in Central Europe and with its special atmosphere is definitely a must do when you visit Budapest. I advise you to go there in the morning for the best prices.

4. Go for art!

For an art experience go to the Ludwig Museum of Contemporary Art. Hosted in a modern, spacious, completely new building on the riverside- you will definitely like both the location and architecture! It’s easy to spend 2 or 3 hours there due to its continuously changing collections. You can also have a guide free of charge.

5. Eat and shop like a local

The Great Market Hall is favoured not only by tourists but many locals shop there on a daily basis. So if you really want to feel, taste and smell Budapest it’s definitely worth to visit. Try the Hungarian cuisine and let me know after if you were lucky enough to find out what’s the lángos, palacsinta and rétes. Don’t forget to try Túró Rudi, the Hungarians favourite sweetness.

+1 Bonus!

If you are ‘wild, young and free’ why not try something new? Stay in a party hostel during your visit and you definitely won’t regret it. It’s perfect to meet new people and experience new things. Party hostels has the reputation for a good time and I recommend you to stay in Grandio located in the city centre.

Have a good time!
