Reminds me of John Fiske’s writing about pop culture, and how elites (for lack of a better word) often write and talk about it as if people are passive recipients of mass media. In reality, people interact with pop culture in very personal ways, and their relationships with pop culture have more give & take than their relationships with more “important” institutions in society.
